Most landlords and real estate agents are genuine, but rental scams do occur. Before renting a property, make sure the person or agency is legitimate by checking their website, contact details, and other rental listings.
Be cautious if you are:
- Asked to pay before inspecting the property.
- Charged a fee to arrange an inspection.
- Asked to pay by cash or credit card rather than bank transfer.
- Asked to pay an unusually high bond, excessive rent in advance, or other unexpected fees.
- Offered a property that seems much cheaper or better than similar rentals.
- Asked to hand over personal documents such as your passport.
- Not given your own key or access code.
- Not provided with a standard rental agreement or the landlord’s contact details.
- Pressured to make a quick decision or payment without completing a formal rental application.
If something feels rushed, suspicious, or too good to be true, take extra care and seek advice before paying any money.
